Featured Mom

This months featured mom is Debra Doherty

Hi my name is Debra Doherty I have been married to my husband Hugh (second and finally hubby) for 9 1/2 years it will be 10 on June 29 and with my mood swings and attitude I am surprised he is still with me I grew up and have lived in Massachusetts. Our daughter Catherine (named after my husbands mother) Theresa (named after my grandmother) was born premature on March 13, 1993, at 2 lbs her due date was June 6th I guess she just couldn't wait to see the big snow storm we were having that day. They would not let me see her the first few days no explanation why. When I finally did I was scared all the tubes attached to her. I could never understand why I went in to premature labor I know I did everything right I started labor on a Wed and they took her on that SAT because they could not stop the contractions. For the next three months I spent every day at the hospital from 5am to 6-7pm Started back top work part-time and went straight to the hospital afterwards. Everyday I was there the nurses would tell me I know you want to take her home but you can't until she is off the monitor She was on the monitor because every once in awhile her immune system would shut down and you would have to rub her back and call her name to get her stimulated again She was kept in a separate room because she was sensitive to noise and bright light. Well, to make a long story short One day the nurse told me they were sending her home with the monitor and they would show me CPR I did not feel comfortable since for three months they were the ones you told me she could not go home till she was off. She came home on a Sunday That Monday they sent a visiting nurse out who was surprised they sent her home she called her supervisor and we had her back in that night because she should not have been let go A few weeks later they said they were going to release her she was doing better but still on the monitor I fought and fought to keep her there till she was completely off They won I took her home this time without the nurses coming out that was Monday on early wed morning she was very cranky and did not sound right I held her and did everything I could to comfort her She finally fell asleep about 45 minutes later I went to check on her and she was blue and not breathing and I could not remember CPR i was so mad! I called 911 Three hours later she was gone I held her dead body in my arms yelling at her to wake up until the nurse took her from me. After that I went right back to work but should have taken time for myself because my concentration was not there A job I did for 20 years I was making stupid mistakes. If I had talk to someone I might not have made other stupid mistakes like having my tubes tied a few months later because I heard someone talking about it and no one not family or friends talked me out of it.

Right now I ma not working I am on SSI for about 5 years see a therapist once every three weeks. I am trying to find a job I can do at home because of my mood swings I rather not be in an office.

Now about me I collect angels I have them all over my house even in the kitchen and bathroom also some in my car. I like to needle point and crochet also do latch hook rugs. I needlepoint a lot of baby blankets with a crochet blanket on the back (to hide the stitches) So far I have made around 15 for friends and other family members having babies If anybody would like one let me know They take a little time but they keep my mind occupied. Shopping is also a passion of mine ask my hubby. I am 46 years old no other children. I have fibramayalger and arthritis getting a little worse instead of better but it doesn't stop me from doing things Well I will not bore you any more except to say how much I wish I had Angel Moms in my life at the beginning I feel you more of a family then my own You are all a true blessing and I would do anything for any of you.

My Special Angelmom Friends

There are some very special friends I have met,
Through a group called Angelmoms on the Internet.
These women have joined together in grief,
And have found a measure of relief.
In telling their stories of their children,
That helps the hurt and begins the healin',
Of how their sons and daughters lost their lives.
And of the many daily strives,
That as mothers we go through,
That's why the poem was written just for you.
That in some way, some how,
My words will bring you comfort now.
To all ,of you in your pain,
That you may know that I feel the same.
If only we could see faces of our loved ones but that is not to be,
Until that sweet day we'll see them all again and shout with glee,
As they come and guide us through heavens door,
Where we'll never part from them forevermore.

HOW TO HELP ME GRIEVE

BE THERE FOR ME
I feel alone, in pain
I need a friend.

SHARE MY SORROW
Speak from your heart
I have to talk about my feelings

LET ME GRIEVE
Listen to me, I need to cry
We all grieve in our own way
and in a different time frame.

KEEP THE MEMORY ALIVE
It is always on my mind
I have so many memories

I NEED YOUR HELP
Help me, call me, pray for me
Do whatever you can.

DON'T DESERT ME
Don't desert me after the 1st or 2nd week
I need you especially on the holidays

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
Involve me, listen to me months later
I need your interest and invitations

BE MY FRIEND
Don't be afraid of me or my grief
It's okay to cry
Lastly, please don't criticize until you've walked in my shoes
INSTEAD: PRAY FOR ME!

From Debbie's Desk

Just a quick note saying that I think I have fully recovered now from my miscarriage and I wanted to thank everyone for their prayers and love for me and my family. We are just hoping that God sees fit to give us another chance at a little bundle of joy sometime soon....:)

At the moment I am helping organize our next AngelMoms Retreat here in the mountains of Tennessee. For the ones of you that are coming, I can't wait to meet you, and for the ones that can't come this time, we will share our many pictures with you all! Don't be discouraged if you can't come this year, but we will be doing them every year if possible and so far mainly different members are coming this year than last year. So you just never know....:)

Bless you all!

Debbie

Craft Exchange

This month I will be hosting two craft exchanges.

The first one will be an angel block exchange. You will be making 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 muslin blocks with angels on them and a verse. These blocks will be colored in with colored pencils ad ironed to set the color. You will make enough blocks for each person who joins. Each block will be a traced picture of an angel, colored, ironed and then stitched with DMC floss #336 and mailed out to everyone by May 23.

Mother's day is our theme for the month and I think this will be a surprise exchange. For those that join, your name will be sent to another AngelMom and she will make you a Mother's Day gift. This gift will be made with love and no name included.. its a gift from an angel.

National Crime Victims Rights Week 2002

April 21-27, 2002

Theme: Bringing Honor To Victims

Crime Victims' Rights Week is an opportunity to honor victims of crime and to promote the rights of crime victims.

The red and black ribbon was first designed in 1987 by Betty O'Donnell, parent of a murdered child and member of the Long Island, NY Chapter. The red represents the violence in society and the black symbolizes death and mourning. Angel pins are worn with the ribbons to symbolize the victims.
